The main reason forestry mulching is a preferred option for bushfire prevention, is its ability to mulch all the fine fuel loads on the ground, then mix it in with the soil.

Fuel size governs how quickly fuels burn. Fine fuels are less than 6mm in diameter (leaves, twigs, etc.) and burn quickly.

Without mulching, the fine fuels sustain the flame front of the fire, but by mulching these into a fine mulch, it helps to reduce the intensity of the fire.
